Venus In Spirals are a Manchester-based alternative rock trio comprising songwriter, vocalist and guitarist Liam Atkin, bassist Ethan Ranson and drummer Alex Cullen. Combining hook-driven songwriting with fuzz-heavy guitars, warped textures and walls of distortion, the band create music that sits somewhere between the melodic intensity of Pixies, the fuzz-soaked guitar sound of Dinosaur Jr. and the dream-pop experimentation of Medicine and My Bloody Valentine.
After developing his songwriting through a series of home recordings and solo releases, Liam formed Venus In Spirals in Manchester in late 2025. Joined by Ethan on bass and Alex on drums, he transformed the project into a three-piece band capable of capturing the volume, dynamics and unpredictability of the songs in a live setting.
Rooted in the alternative rock and noise-pop sounds of the 1990s, Venus In Spirals balance abrasive guitars with memorable melodies and emotionally direct songwriting. Their influences also extend to artists including Darcy Clay, Slint and Elliott Smith, but the trio bring these reference points together in a sound that is distinctly their own: raw and melodic, heavy and vulnerable, abrasive and euphoric.
Since forming, Venus In Spirals have been establishing themselves within Manchester’s independent music scene through energetic live performances. Ethan’s driving bass and Alex’s powerful drumming provide the foundation for Liam’s frantic but melodic vocals and distorted guitar work. Their shows place the songs’ quieter, more introspective moments alongside bursts of feedback, distortion and physical intensity, allowing the material to take on a heavier and more unpredictable character onstage.
The band will release their four-track debut EP, WORN, on 14 October 2026. Across the record, Venus In Spirals explore depression, anxiety, addiction and the fear of missed opportunities. Rather than presenting these subjects neatly, the EP captures the tension and emotional confusion surrounding them through contrasting melodies, noise and shifting dynamics.
Ahead of the EP, the band will release their debut single, “I Love My Sweater,” on 25 September, followed by “Around Colourful Way” on 9 October. On the evening of WORN’s release, Venus In Spirals will play their first Manchester headline show at The Eagle Inn.
With more material already written and further releases planned, WORN marks the beginning of an ambitious new chapter for Venus In Spirals: shaped by Manchester’s independent live scene and driven by the desire to make loud, emotionally honest alternative rock.
